Glimpse of the Job:

The Senior Housing Research Scientist will establish a robust, applied research program focused on housing in the state of Texas and will inform the long-term research agenda around housing issues. The successful candidate will be the primary representative of the Center among housing industry stakeholders. The position offers opportunities to use the Center’s vast database of proprietary datasets and will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, data analysts and graduate students. The primary stakeholder audiences include residential realtors, homebuilders, mortgage bankers, municipal governments, and other industry affiliates. The Center also seeks to better inform the public on major housing issues, such as homeownership and tenant rights and responsibilities. The Center supports a collaborative research culture, and the Senior Housing Research Scientist will have the opportunity to engage specialists in rural land, commercial, and other areas.

About the Center:

The Texas Real Estate Research Center was founded in 1971 by an act of the Texas Legislature. The Center’s enabling legislation defines a broad mandate to “conduct studies in all areas related directly or indirectly to real estate and/or urban or rural economics.” In addition to research programs in residential, commercial, and rural land economics, the Center maintains administrative, data, and communications teams to support its research agenda. What You Need To Know:

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.

This is an applied research position with no possibility for tenure and has no teaching assignments. Publication requirements are met through the Center’s quarterly magazine, TG, and ad-hoc technical reports released on the Center’s website. Center publications serve the broader real estate industry, banking practitioners, government officials and lay audiences. Research must be designed with these groups in mind.

Other Requirements and Factors:

  • Travel required primarily in Texas to meet with constituents and deliver presentations.
  • Employees who drive a university or personal vehicle are required to have a valid, state-issued drivers license.
  • After-hours work as needed to meet job demands.

 

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctorate degree in real estate, finance, economics, or related field.
  • Eight years of real estate, finance, economics, or related research experience.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Willingness to focus on the Texas housing economy and develop as a subject matter expert.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills for a wide variety of audiences ranging from local economic and real estate professionals to industry leaders and government officials.
  • Analytical skills, including knowledge of research design, econometric analysis and best practices in summarizing and visualizing economic data in easy-to-understand ways.
  • Working proficiency in econometric or analytical software and/or GIS.
  • Strong, applied understanding of the macroeconomic and institutional drivers of housing markets, including financial markets, demographics, household formation and composition, employment, income, and government regulations. Ability to synthesize these to explain housing market dynamics.
  • High standard of excellence and research integrity.
  • Able to perform independently or as part of a multidisciplinary collaborative team.
  • Proven ability and eagerness to work well with others and to mentor and supervise direct reports.
  • Service-minded; detail-oriented.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Subject matter expert in the Texas housing environment.
  • PhD in Finance or Real Estate.
  • Twelve or more years of progressively responsible applied research experience delivering actionable research insights.
  • Applied research experience in industry.
  • Must have a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

 

Responsibilities

  • Research Duties – Responsible for overseeing and conducting complex independent research into the field of real estate housing economics. Stay abreast of the industry and maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise. Identify industry nuances and adapt research initiatives to answer questions appropriate to constituency. Work with the research director to develop projects. Produce findings in a timely manner.
  • Presentations – Present as a subject matter expert. Prepare presentation materials appropriate for small and/or large groups, to include industry leaders, trade associations, lay people, and municipal, county, or other government leaders.
  • Technical Writing – Analyze research data and summarize results. Disseminate findings through articles, technical reports, research papers, and other publications.
  • Mentor/Supervise – Mentor and develop direct reports. Assign responsibilities and monitor output. Perform annual evaluations and reviews.
  • Industry Liaison /Other – Develop relationships with local realtor boards and associations to facilitate collaboration. Support the Center’s mission and promote the Center’s profile across the industry. Respond to media requests. Participate in research and other staff meetings.
