Position Summary James Madison University (JMU) seeks an innovative, forward-thinking and visionary leader to serve as its next Executive Director of the Gilliam Center for Entrepreneurship (GCFE). Located in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley, James Madison University is a highly selective, diverse, comprehensive, student-oriented institution with an approximate enrollment of 21,000 undergraduate and 1,900 graduate students and over 900 full-time instructional faculty. The University is committed to innovation, superlative teaching and scholarship and has achieved national recognition for the quality of its academic programs. The 130 full-time faculty in College of Business offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees and graduate approximately 700 undergraduate and 100 graduate students each year. The College of Business was recently rated by Business Week magazine as one of the top 5% undergraduate business programs in the country. Housed in the College of Business and founded in 1985, the GCFE has a compelling mission: to cultivate student entrepreneurs and support faculty entrepreneurs across all colleges within the University. The GCFE is located in the center of a new 210,000-square-foot College of Business Learning Complex, a $100 million building completed in 2020. The new Executive Director of the GCFE will arrive at a critical time. With the COVID pandemic looming over higher education, universities face continuing adversity in multiple forms. The pandemic also highlights, however, the vital role of entrepreneurialism. Numerous effective vaccines have been developed by private sector companies – in coordination with government, healthcare and university partners – in record time, demonstrating the power of innovation at a crucial moment in our history. In this environment, the Executive Director has the opportunity to work with an experienced Advisory Board, ready partners internally and externally, and a supportive administration to create a dynamic Center poised to lead entrepreneurship efforts at JMU. The Executive Director will provide leadership and vision for the GCFE with a focus on growing an entrepreneurial mindset across campus. The position spans a range of exciting areas, from fostering entrepreneurship in all nine JMU colleges to start-up incubation to partnership development with local businesses and the community at large. The position is primarily administrative in nature although the successful candidate will also be expected to teach one class each semester in the area of entrepreneurship within the Management Department. Additional information about the position, including a leadership profile can be found at www.wittkieffer.com. WittKieffer is assisting James Madison University in this search. For fullest consideration, candidate materials should be received by March 5. Application materials should be submitted using WittKieffer’s candidate portal.
